Bitch Magazine
They’re looking for anything that can be described as “feminist response to pop culture.” Their definition of pop culture is broad, encompassing cultural attitudes and myths, phenomena of the popular imagination, and social trends as well as movies, TV, magazines, books, advertising, and the like. Profiles of and interviews with feminist culture-makers are welcome, as are book and music reviews and nuanced analyses of particularly horrifying and/or inspiring examples of pop culture. Nonfiction essays only. They do not publish fiction or poetry. Payment is $100 for features, $50 for front-of-book pieces and back-page pieces, and $10-$20 for Love/Shoves.

Herizons Magazine
As Canada’s most popular feminist magazine, they seek articles about applying feminist principles in work, in relationships and organizations, and in social justice. Their readers are interested in health issues, social and political issues, environmental issues, equality issues, justice issues, spiritual issues; parenting issues and all issues informed by diverse racial and cultural experiences. Articles in which the writer is engaged with the material she writes about work best; personal experiences, journalism style articles, interviews, articles which bring in current research and a clear feminist perspective are all things they look for. Payment is made upon publication. Articles in Herizons are licensed for first time North American rights @ .20 cents per word with an additional .5 cents per word is to be paid for non-exclusive subsidiary rights, including the right to transfer articles to CD rom for educational/academic libraries and/or secure on-line database services for a period of two years. Revenue received in the form of royalty payments is funelled directly into freelance payments.

Her Sports Magazine
Features generally fall within one of two distinct categories: profiles and training articles. Generally, feature stories range from 1,200 to 2,000 words and should include relevant sidebars that will be described in detail by the editor upon acceptance. Also accepts queries for various departments (see guidelines for full list of topics). Payment will be determined on a per-article basis based on the research requirements and story length, as well as the proven experience of the contributor. Buys all North American serial rights, and payment is made on publication. General fees range from $150 to $450.

Skirt! Magazine
Publishes eight to 14 personal essays every month on topics relating to women and women’s interests. A personal essay is a narrative that emphasizes a personal, subjective view. All essays for consideration should be submitted in their entirety and be between 800 and 1,200 words. Submissions over 1,200 words will not be considered. Payment for articles and other submissions varies. Skirt! buys one-time rights.

Woman’s Day Magazine
Publishes articles from freelance writers on a broad range of subjects of special interest to women, including marriage, health, diet and exercise, spirituality, saving and managing money, interpersonal relationships, careers, lifestyle issues, etc. The editors are primarily interested in practical, service-oriented pieces that will help millions of readers improve their lives. Article lengths range from 650 to 1,600 words. Pays top rates upon acceptance. Query first; do not send entire manuscripts.
