5280 is Denver’s premier guide to the arts, entertainment, dining, and lifestyle issues in the Mile-High City. Almost any topic is fair game, provided that it has a strong connection to life in Denver. The best places for new writers to break into the magazine are the Profiles (800-1,000 words), Getaways (1,000 words), or Atmosphere (300-400 words) sections. You can also propose feature stories (2,000-4,000 words), though these assignments are less likely to go to newcomers. Query first. Fees for articles vary, depending on writer and piece.

Baja Life
Subjects of interest include Recreational Activities, Marine and Desert Ecology, Tourist Interests, The Native People of Baja, Environmental Issues, Historical Figures and Events, Retirement and Living, Cultural and Tradition, Arts and Music and Business and Resort Development. Feature articles run 2,000 words plus. Columns and travel reports run 600 to 1,000 words. Pays 10 cents per word. Payment is made upon publication.

Seeks stories 500 - 700 words on nightlife, activities, sightseeing or road trips, fascinating and unusual perspectives on cultural or historical points, interesting lodging or dining experiences, festivals. Pays 10 cents per word on acceptance. Buys one time rights.

Feature articles must cover a unique aspect of the cultural or natural environments of featured destinations. Wants up-to-date destination guides about fascinating places. Stories should be anywhere from 800 to 2,000 words long. Pays $25 for features. Purchases First Worldwide Electronic Rights.

Literary Traveler
Seeks travel stories/articles with a literary theme. Pays a flat rate for most articles, and a smaller honorarium for shorter pieces such as reviews or literary events coverage. Pays upon publication. Generally publishes material three months after acceptance.

Marco Polo Magazine
This national magazine geared to adventure travelers over 50 seeks feature articles from 1,500 to 3,000 words. Payment is negotiable based on the newsworthiness of the article and the qualifications of its writer. Pays $200 for most feature articles with photography. Buys First North American Serial Rights, as well as nonexclusive digital reprint rights.

National Geographic Traveler
Features range from 1,500 to 2,500 words, depending on the subject. Departments generally run from 750 to 1,500 words. Compensation varies depending on the type of feature or department but is competitive with other national magazines. Payment is made upon acceptance. Buys all rights to manuscripts, although copyright is returned to the author 90 days after publication.
