Animal and Pet Markets

Animal Wellness Magazine
Articles may range in length from 500 to 1,500 words. If you submit an outline for a story, please also send samples of your work. Encourages submissions for their Animal Passages and Tail End columns, but welcomes other articles as well, as long as they focus on holistic healing, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. Pays for one-time rights only.

Aquarium Fish International
Publishes articles about a wide variety of both fresh- and saltwater topics. Pay rates can vary, depending on length and level of technicality. They generally pay $400 for a 2,000-word article, less for shorter pieces; they normally do not run articles shorter than 1,000 words or longer than 2,000 words. Buys first-time North American rights. Pays on publication.

Bark Magazine
Commentaries, essays, stories, fiction and well-researched non-fiction will be considered but all work must prominently include dogs. Articles and stories should not exceed 2,000 words. Ideally an article should be no longer than 1,200 words, and will stand a better chance of publication if it is below this limit. They also accept short pieces (less than 600 words) on general tips, how-to articles and on other topics. Pays upon publication; compensation varies according to complexity and length of article and is individually negotiated.

Cat Fancy
Seeks informative articles dealing with feline health, nutrition, grooming, behavior and training, as well as special interest articles on cat-related events, hobbies, entertainment or crafts. 1,200-1,500 words. Pays $200-$400.

Desert Dog News
Looking for Tucson-area writers who wish to write about Tucson’s pet culture including but not limited to: activities, local Tucsonans who are making a difference for the animals, events, non-fiction essays, adoption stories, travel and notable Tucsonans and their dogs. They are especially interested in local human interest stories that have to do with dogs. Pays between $50-$140 per article. Payment generally issued within 45 days of accepting an article for publication.

EQUUS
A horse health publication for laymen, EQUUS features articles on health care, behavior, training techniques, veterinary breakthroughs and exercise physiology. Welcomes freelance submissions to any section of the magazine. Features generally run from 1,600 to 3,000 words, and the amount of payment depends on quality, length and complexity of the story.

I Love Cats
Seeks stories about cats and their owners, interesting or odd happenings with cats, tips for cat owners, health issues, nonfiction pieces, behavior problems. Pays between $25-$50.

Naples Dog Magazine
This southwest Florida magazine seeks feel-good articles about canines, including personal essays, how-to articles, vet profiles, and more. You don’t have to be a Florida native, but you do need to grasp the dog niche. They have writers nationwide. Articles run 325-1500 words. Payment ranges from $25-$250, depending on length and complexity. Pays on publication.

Reptiles Magazine
Generally pays $250 to $600 for a 1,000 to 2,000-word article with good photos; less for shorter pieces. No previously published articles. Buys first-time North American rights. Prefers freelance writers query first.
